Basic Tips
-Using Your Radar-
Your radar can save or fry your ass. If you don't know how to read your radar, you will find yourself back shooting womp rats on Tatooine. The radar is a 3D representation of the battlefield. Good guys show up in green, baddies show up in red. A line is attached to each, measuring their altitude--The longer the line, the higher the altitude. Blue objects are neutral craft. The orange cone directs you towards your mission goal. Steer yourself so the cone is open to the north and head straight. When you reach the mission area, the goal will disappear. Find your targets and let 'em have it.
-Using the Targeting Computer-
Pressing and holding down the Y button brings up the targeting computer. The name is pretty misleading because it doesn't target anything for you. The targeting computer shows you enemies and destroyable objects in your view. High priority targets will appear as yellow and nonessential targets show as purple. Purple objects can be obliterated to add to your Enemies Destroyed total. This wanton destruction will be necessary in most missions to achieve gold medals. The more you use the targeting computer, the lower your Targeting Computer Efficiency rating. You need a high rating in most missions to attain a gold medal. Once you obtain the Targeting Computer Upgrade, you will be able to order your wingmen to attack specific targets.
-Directing your Troops-
Pressing the D-Pad brings up the Communications Display. Press the D-Pad again to command your troops to attack specific targets, flee, or join formation. The enemies your wingmen destroy do not count towards your kill total. So, they are actually taking kills away from you. To get gold medals, you may need to instruct them to flee to ensure you can get enough kills. When toolin' around in your fighter, you can command your R2 unit to repair your shields. When you've taken serious damage, the Communications Display may appear. Press the D-Pad in any direction quickly to get your astromech on the repairs. If you aren't fast enough, you'll lose your astromech (Oh no, I've lost R2!) for the remainder of the mission and cause C3P0 to cry.
-Weapons Display-
Located in the bottom right corner of the screen, the Weapons Display shows an outline of your secondary weapon along with the number of shots remaining. Depending on the vehicle you are piloting, the lower left corner will represent your speed burst or ion cannon. If the meter fills orange, it represents your ability to speed burst. Once the meter is full, you can press the R Trigger hard to get a burst of speed. This is essential for passing the Tatooine Training mission. If the meter fills blue, it represents your ion cannon charge. Once the meter fills, you can let loose another blast from your ion cannon. As you fire your primary lasers, a yellow line will circle the Weapons Display box. The longer you allow the line to travel, the more powerful your next laser blast.
-The Art of Dogfighting-
To kick some Imperial bootay, you'll need to become a master at dogfighting. Your toughest challenge will come from TIE interceptors. They can come close to matching your speed and are hard to shake. When you have a bogie on you, your best bet is to accelerate and then brake hard. Often this will send your pursuer flying past you. Now the student has become the master. Sometimes this isn't enough to shake a bogie. Try accelerating and doing a loop-the-loop. Usually, you can get the advantage on your opponent. When you can't, try to simply lose them. If you are in a planetary battle, fly low and zip around structures. If all else fails, order your wingmen into formation. A lot of times, they'll take out the bogie on their approach.
-Switching Ships-
During some missions, you can switch ships. If you see a blue Rebel icon, fly towards it to change to the available ship onscreen. While it may be cool to switch ships, it's not always necessary or beneficial. Yeah, a cloud car is fun, but who wouldn't rather be zipping around in an X-wing?
Upgrading your Ship
Ship upgrades can be found on many of the main levels. The upgrades are essential to achieving gold medals, especially in the bonus missions. See the walkthrough for specific locations of all upgrades.
Advanced Shields - Increases the strength of your shields.
Location: Death Star Attack
Advanced Photon Torpedoes - Your Photon Torpedoes will do more damage.
Location: Ison Corridor Ambush
advertisement
Advanced Laser Tech - Your laser cannons will be more powerful, natch.
Location: Battle of Hoth
Advanced Cluster Missiles - More powerful missiles means more destruction!
Location: Prisoners of the Maw
Advanced Proton Bombs - Things blow up much easier with this upgrade.
Location: Razor Rendezvous
Homing Proton Torpedoes - Press B to lock onto a target. Once a target is locked on, press B to fire the torpedo.
Location: Vengeance on Kothlis
Advanced Concussion Missiles - Concussion Missiles that have eaten their spinach.
Location: Imperial Academy Heist (Daytime)
Advanced Spread Proton Bombs - Such a sweet weapon. Explodes like a normal Proton Bomb and spreads a fire of smaller bombs.
Location: Imperial Academy Heist (Nighttime)
Homing Concussion Missiles - Ooh look, the missiles follow people now. Fun! Press B to lock onto a target and press B again to fire the missile.
Location: Raid on Bespin
Homing Cluster Missiles - Since you can't drop a nuke, this is the most powerful weapon in the game. Not only will it easily waste all enemies, your accuracy rating will be phenomenal. Homing Cluster Missiles cannot be targeted and will go after the closest five targets. Make sure you don't fire near your Rebel pals, or you may just take out some friendlies.
Location: Battle of Endor
Advanced Targeting Computer - After getting this upgrade, you won't have to hold down the Y button to keep the Targeting Computer on. You can also send your wingmen to attack specific targets.
Location: Strike at the Core
Tips
Worry about getting bronze in the initial ten missions. Once you have the bronze in all ten, focus on retrieving the various weapons upgrades. Gold medals become much more attainable once you have the upgrades.
Skip all cut-scenes when attempting to get Gold medals. The cut-scenes count for mission time. How ass is that? Very ass.

Practice, practice, practice. This game is insane and requires a lot of play to earn all the golds.
The Ships
T-16 Skyhopper
Remember during Star Wars when Luke was acting all cocky, bragging to a bunch of trained Rebel fighters about how he would hop into his dinky T-16 and pick off womp rats to pass the time? And you were like, hey what's a T-16 look like? Now you know. It's not much of a ship and can only be used on Tatooine. Apparently, it was designed specifically for lonely farm boys who want to race their lonely farm boy friends on a Saturday night and shoot defenseless animals. Keen! If you own a T-16, you just may be a redneck.
Primary Weapon: Double laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Proton bombs, ion cannons
X-wing
The Mustang of the Rebel fleet, the X-Wing is fast, maneuverable, and packs a nice punch with its quad laser cannons. It's the most balanced aircraft the Rebellion has and will be your ship of choice for most missions. When the S-Foil wings are closed, this baby can really fly, but it cannot fire. When piloting, make certain not to be speeding along with the wings closed when you need to be blasting away Imperials.
Primary Weapon: Quad laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Proton torpedoes
A-Wing
The fastest ship in the Rebel fleet, the A-Wing is best suited for missions that require speed but little confrontation. The hull and shielding are weak, requiring you to utilize the A-Wings speed as much as possible in combat. It doesn't have the firepower of the X-Wing or B-Wing either.
Primary Weapon: Double laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Concussion missiles
Airspeeder
This puppy is great for air-to-ground combat. It can fight on any terrain and is more maneuverable than the Empire's ground units like the AT-AT or the AT-ST. The airspeeder has a tow cable that can be used to trip up slow-moving AT-ATs. It's very Three Stooges. Nyuk nyuk nyuk. The tow cable, in theory, could be used to tow things as well, but the Rebellion has never tested it for this purpose. Because the airspeeder is not designed for space combat, it can only be used on planetary missions.
Primary Weapon: Double laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Tow cable
Y-Wing
It moves like your grandma after six shots of tequila, but the Y-Wing has a lot of shielding and cannon pop (again, like your grandma). The Y-Wing is not very useful in space combat, but is great for planetary missions that require bombing runs.
Primary Weapon: Double laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Proton bombs, ion cannons

B-Wing
One of the stranger looking aircraft in the Rebel fleet, the B-Wing packs a serious wallop with its triple laser cannons, proton torpedoes, and ion cannons. It's not that fast, but it has some thick armor to take a pounding. The B-Wing is great when you need a lot of firepower without having to dogfight.
Primary Weapon: Triple laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: Proton torpedoes, ion cannons
Cloud Car
Who wouldn't want a car built to ride the clouds? Well, anyone who wants to win. The cloud car is not well shielded. Fortunately, it doesn't come with much firepower. Of course, Lando likes to drive it 'cause it impresses the ladies. But you're no Lando Calrissian. It's cool to drive the cloud car around, but you won't be winning any golds with this baby.
Primary Weapon: Double laser cannons
Secondary Weapon: None
TIE Fighter
It's obvious the Empire is trying to shave operating costs, because this common Empire aircraft is held together with duct tape and prayers. The TIE fighter is very maneuverable, but has no shielding. You'll have to rely on your piloting skills to shake Rebel scum from your tailpipe. It will only take a few hits to send you to Imperial heaven.
Primary Weapon: Dual Laser Cannons
Secondary Weapon: None
Imperial Shuttle
The Imperial shuttle is not meant for combat. Completing levels with the shuttle will be difficult at best. The shuttle is meant to carry troops or VIP. Unfortunately, there's no limo level where you have to transport the Emperor to the premiere of the newest Star Wars flick. If you want a real challenge, try to get golds with the Imperial shuttle.
Primary Weapon:
Secondary Weapon: Tail Gun
Millennium Falcon
The most famous ship Han Solo has ever flown. This Corellian freighter has been modified for combat. The tail guns are great for taking care of trailing TIE fighters, though it can be difficult to aim. And fast? Well it did make the Kessel run in 12 parsecs. We won't mention that parsecs are a measure of distance not time. Oh wait, I just mentioned it. Well, it's fast anyway.
Primary Weapon: Laser Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Concussion Missiles
Naboo Starfighter
This classic fighter seen in the Star Wars prequels is sleek and fast. It is similar to the X-Wing in speed and maneuverability. It has less punch than the X-Wing, but it is a nice ride. For those into personal torture, you can pretend it's little Anakin flying the Naboo Starfighter, shouting "Yipee!" everytime he does anything. Even when he dies.
Primary Weapon: Dual Laser Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Proton Torpedoes

Slave I
Boba Fett is the baddest ass in the Star Wars universe. You'd think that the coolest cat would have the coolest ride, but you'd be wrong. Slave I is a slow, lumbering, weak piece of junk. It is very effective when used in the Ison Corridor Ambush (once you have the Homing Cluster Missiles), but is otherwise a waste of time. To be honest, it's worse than the Imperial Shuttle, and that's a friggin' shuttle.
Primary Weapon: Dual Laser Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Cluster Missiles
TIE Advanced X1 Prototype
That Darth Vader is one bad motha. The TIE Advanced is Darth's personal carriage of destruction. With plenty of shielding and great maneuverability, the TIE Advanced's only weakness is its lack of speed. Once you have obtained the Homing Cluster Missiles, you may never want to pilot another ship. The Homing Cluster Missiles make the TIE Advanced the deadliest ship you can pilot. Getting gold in Triumph of the Empire is nearly impossible without the Cluster Missile upgrade. With it, the gold is just a matter of execution. And you know Darth is all about execution.

Secondary Weapon: Cluster missiles
